This child escape respirator is rated to block mustard gas, which is the standard used for testing CBRN masks and hoods. Beyond that, it depends on the filter you use. If you use a ParticleMax P3 filter, it will only block particles. If you use an NBC-77 SOF filter, it will block particulates, plus CBRN agents. With the VK-530 filter, it will block CBRN threats and oxidize carbon monoxide for fire escape purposes.

So long as this system is used with the appropriate filter, it will work. Just make sure this mask isn't exposed to very high heat, as it is not made for hot ash falling on top of it. For volcanic eruptions and wildfires, we would suggest going with a multigas filter like the NBC-77 SOF, or VK-530, as they filter a wide array of contaminants.

A set of four CR123 batteries will last about 8 hours with continuous use. The time the filter will last depends on a few factors, including the contaminant type, concentration, breathing rate, along with atmospheric conditions. Generally speaking, a filter should last a full day under normal use conditions. If you are in an environment with very high concentrations of contaminants, use time will be reduced. I would suggest looking at the technical specs of the NBC-77 SOF Filter for an exact answer. The CM-3M Kids Gas Mask can be turned on or off, as needed.

For safety, we recommend using one filter per day, as you can decontaminate the outside housing of a filter cartridge, but not the inside (where the filtration paper is). this system will run for around eight continuous hours with one set of four CR123A batteries. Disinfection depends on the threat. If the threat is viral, we recommend using Allegro respirator wipes, or their cleaning solution. The blower weighs 1.8lb with the filter installed and can be attached via a back harness, or an included belt clip. The mask itself weighs 1.4lb.

We only suggest the MD-1 as a budget-friendly option if the child has the lung capacity to blow up a balloon. If not, we recommend going with the CM-3M as an alternative. Overall the CM-3M is a superior product as it lowers breathing resistance, has a wider field of view, comes with a hydration system, and the blower can also be used with all of our adult masks once the child outgrows the mask. Please keep in mind, you can use a PAPR system with the MD-1 as well, although the MD-1 does not come with it as a standard accessory.

Your child can sleep in a car seat while wearing this, but it is vital to monitor the child to ensure they are comfortable, and the device is properly working. There is a built-in exhalation valve, but it is not meant as a failsafe. The function of this valve is to allow air to escape under positive pressure and keep contaminated air out. The hood and tubing are submersible for cleaning and disinfection. Yes, you can use this device with your adult respirator as a PAPR, and 45 l/min would be enough for physical activity. We would suggest you train with the PAPR to ensure you're fit enough to perform these activities while wearing the mask. The P3 filter does have two plugs on it that need to be removed before use.
